The gearbox needs to have the oil changed at every 20k or 2 years which ever comes first. You should also change your transfer box and rear axle oil at the same time. It sounds rather frequent but it is correct. However, it is easy to do it yourself if you don't mind crawling around underneath.
I always removed the cover and sucked out the oil, after a failed attempt of sucking out the dipstick once. You can get the gearbox much cleaner that way and get all the oil out. Taking off the cover is pretty easy. I found a handy way to get the most oil out of the XU's is to gently heat the gearbox with a heat gun. RWS7.
