So here's the deal: 2007-2012 E90 uses the N47 engine that has a nasty habit of breaking the distribution chain (factory problem) and bmw has not done any recalls on the matter. A repair would likely be in the 2000-2500 euro range, around 3000$ worst case scenario. Now from 2006-2007 the E90 had the M47 engine that didnt have this problem.
A 2008 320d would have the 177bhp engine with around 350nm as standard so I can't believe BMW would fit a gearbox that will only cope with that amount of torque as a limit The transmission may be tweaked for BMW like the N54 6AT. That can only do 450Nm yet people are pushing over 600Nm.

No difference in bhp, same engines are available in standard and m sport, differences on the m sport include lower stiffer suspension, different body kit (front and rear bumpers and skirts), and interior differences such as different sportier seats, steering wheel, gear stick etc. I am sure there are other differences and others will chime in
